Unlocked/Reconnected
We are proud to participate in the exhibition Unlocked/Reconnected, an initiative that connects 'houses for art' throughout the Netherlands: museums, presentation institutions, galleries, artists' initiatives and corporate collections. The starting point for Unlocked/Reconnected is the idea of solidarity, the will to reflect together on what is home. This comes from the feeling that the opening of the houses after the lockdown forces us to reconsider what home could look like. This sector-wide exhibition underlines the importance of art and culture in this time of global crisis.
As a part of Unlocked/Reconnected we exhibit the work Studio Quarantaine by Sam Andrea as of June 1st. The painting was made in the period when the “intelligent lockdown” just started. Sam Andrea lives in Amsterdam, but his studio is in Zaandam. He decided to lock himself up in his studio together with another artist, a girl he had recently met, for fear of being separated from his work by a total lockdown.
In the studio, Sam appreciated how in such a strange situation small things start to stand out and become important. Washing, for example, became a special ritual, in a plastic container with a pan. In the middle of the large concrete studio the endearing and honest scene looked alienating. The theme of the bathing woman is as old as painting itself, but was given a completely new meaning in Zaandam.
